DescriptionLegislative Republicans say they feel good about their prospects for electing the first Republican House speaker in a generation today.

They also believe their candidates for comptroller, treasurer and secretary of state will prevail in votes expected Wednesday.

House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower, of Bristol, and fellow Republicans are hoping the GOP’s newly won 50-49 edge over Democrats will make the difference in defeating 18-year incumbent Speaker Jimmy Naifeh, D-Covington.

“I think we’ll get it done,” said Rep. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, on Monday as lawmakers prepared for the official start of the 106th General Assembly today at noon CST.

But House Democratic Caucus Chairman Mike Turner, of Nashville, said he believes Rep. Naifeh “has a real shot. I feel better about that today.
