Description | Dan Smith, a political newcomer with strong political family ties to Vermont, began his campaign for Burlington mayor Tuesday with a promise to replace the "tired mindset at City Hall" with a nonpartisan coalition made up of the "best and the brightest" of Burlington's young entrepreneurs, artists and activists.
Smith made his announcement at the Skinny Pancake, a waterfront crepe shop.
He is the son of former Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Smith, and his great-great-uncle has a local school named after him. His grandfather Fred Smith was the founder of the Burlington Savings Bank, and his uncle Charles Smith was a Cabinet officer in the administration of Gov. Jim Douglas. Smith is on leave from his job as general counsel and vice president for the local nonprofit Greater Burlington Industrial Corp.
Smith, 33, who has not previously held office, is running as an independent. He was introduced by Burlington builder Stu McGowan (known for the brightly painted Old North End houses he has restored). |
