Description | With Democrat Frank M. Kratovil Jr. leading Republican Andy Harris by fewer than 1,000 votes in the contentious race for Maryland's 1st Congressional District, the outcome appears to hinge on the unknown number of absentee ballots that will be counted by Nov. 14.
Harris, an anesthesiologist from Baltimore County who has spent 10 years in the state Senate, and Kratovil, the state's attorney for Queen Anne's County, have been fighting for the seat now held by nine-term Rep. Wayne T. Gilchrest.
According to the state Board of Election's Web site this morning, the unofficial election tally so far puts Kratovil in the lead with 160,914 votes. Harris has 159,998 votes a difference of 916. Libertarian Richard James Davis, with 7,924 votes, loomed as a potential spoiler in a district held by Republicans since 1990.
The Web site also indicates that as of Monday, 32,298 absentee ballots had been requested in the 1st District. |
