Description | DETROIT -- Two-term City Councilman Nicholas Hood III will formally announce his mayoral bid at 10 a.m. Monday.
Hood, who was defeated in the primary during his 2001 mayoral bid, said he will turn in his petitions to the city clerk's office and then address his supporters at 10 a.m. at the Spirit of Detroit statue, just steps from the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.
The pastor at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ since 1984 said he's been disappointed with how the city has been run since he's left City Hall, but remained silent. He said he didn't want it to appear like he had sour grapes over losing.
"I realize how critical it is to have people at every level who provide a credible image for the community," said Hood, 57. "It's (also) imperative and crucial that the community has confidence in its leader. I am an individual who has a good reputation (and) knows how government works. I can make an impact in that position."
Candidates have until Tuesday to turn in the 583 required signatures to appear on the ballot for the February primary election. The special election will be May 5 to fill the rest of Kilpatrick's term that ends in November 2009.
Others who have picked up petitions for the mayoral bid include current Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr., Freman Hendrix, Sharon McPhail, state Rep. Coleman A. Young II, Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans and former NBA great and businessman Dave Bing.
Hood was elected to the Detroit City Council in 1993, taking over the seat vacated by his father, Nicholas Hood II. |
