Description | "Please cease and desist from using this flier or any other campaign materials that leave the inaccurate impression that this office or I have endorsed your candidacy."
—U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald
We know from grim experience that editorializing against misleading campaign materials tends to reward the misleader: He or she gets free publicity.
So rather than pound our shoe on the table too loudly, we'll go with a whisper of advice to Tony Peraica, the Republican candidate for Cook County state's attorney: When U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald says he'd like you to "cease and desist"—and when he has a good reason—that strikes us as time for you to be ceasing and desisting.
At issue is a campaign flier that includes a photo of Peraica and, next to it, a photo of Fitzgerald. Peraica told us Tuesday that he's printed a half-million of the fliers. Maybe more. His workers are hanging them on front doorknobs across Cook County. |
