Description | Nancy Reagan knows how to take care of her man. Even when it comes to a 7-foot bronze likeness of him that's headed to the Capitol by September.
Soon after former President Reagan's 2004 death, the buzz about ways to honor him began. Rep. Ken Calvert led the way for a statue of the 40th president to be placed among such American history greats as George Washington in the Capitol's National Statuary Hall.
The state Legislature passed a resolution in 2006 to swap a statue of Thomas Starr King, a minister who helped keep California in the Union during the Civil War, with one of Reagan. The work is now Washington-ready – after a little help from the former first lady.
When she reviewed images of her late husband's statue, she made several suggestions. There was no vent in the back of the jacket, and Reagan's custom-made suits always had vents. The slacks, which were draped over his shoes were all wrong, she said. Reagan liked his slacks cut short. Even the number of buttons on his sleeves had to be changed.
