Description | American Samoa Senate President Lolo M. Moliga plans to run for Governor during the November 4th general election, but he is still looking for a running mate for Lieutenant Governor.
Under local law, the governor and the lieutenant governor run together on one ticket for the gubernatorial race. There are however, no political parties in the territory although local politicians are members of the U.S. Democratic and Republican parties.
The gubernatorial team of Afoa M. Lutu for governor and Velega Savali for lieutenant governor has already announced their candidacy. The incumbent team of Gov.
Togila Tulafono and Lt. Governor Ipulasi Aitofele Sunia have yet to made an official announcement but supporters have met privately to discuss their plans.
Lolo told reporters on Thursday that he is running for governor but an official announcement will be made next month and will name a running mate at that time.
In an interview with Pacific Magazine, Lolo said the territory is facing some very difficult financial times and there remains a lack of economic alternatives, just a continued reliance on the tuna canneries. Lolo believes he can accomplish these goals, if elected as the territory's chief executive.
