DescriptionDemocratic congressional candidate Bobby Bright has asked his opponent to join him in signing a pledge to run a positive campaign.

The Montgomery mayor's re quest came Tuesday, the same day Bright began airing ads in the Montgomery market.

The pledge echoes the mes sage that Bright tries to convey in the ads now airing in the Dot han and Montgomery markets -- that both candidates in the 2nd District race run a positive campaign.

Bright ordered his staff to fol low the pledge and to deliver it to the office of his Republican opponent, state Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery.

"We have received Bobby Bright's proposal, hours after the media did, which indicates it is more of a political publicity stunt than it is a sincere apĀpeal," said Michael Lowry, Love's campaign manager.

Lowry said he has not had an opportunity to discuss the pledge with Love and did not know whether he would sign it.

Bright's staff also posted the pledge in his Montgomery cam paign office.

Bright and Love are compet ing to become the next represen tative of the 2nd Congressional District, which covers 16 coun ties in central and south Alaba ma including Autauga, Elmore and part of Montgomery coun ties. The election is in Novem ber.

The election is expected to be expensive with both men likely to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to air television and radio ads throughout the cam paign.

Bright is asking for those ads to be positive and about issues. He said in a statement that he will conduct his campaign in a respectable manner in line with his faith and values.

"In this campaign, the people of Alabama's 2nd District want to hear about both candidates' records, values, and plans to create jobs, lower gas prices, and end illegal immigration," Bright said. "That is why I am pledging today to run a cam paign that respects the voters of Alabama and focuses on bring ing people together rather than tearing people down."
