Description | Gov. Jennifer Granholm took her oath Wednesday as Michigan's first female governor, calling for more civic involvement to help the cash-strapped government assist families.
"Answer the call for a new Michigan patriotism" to assist seniors, children and even neighborhood schools, she told nearly 4,000 people who streamed into the capital on a cold New Year's Day to witness her historic ascension to the state's highest office.
Granholm, the first Democratic governor in 12 years, said in her address that as the door to the state's highest office opened to her as a woman, it also should stir its residents to extend themselves to one another. |
