DescriptionIn a likely bid to seek the state Independence Party's endorsement, Republican presidential hopeful John McCain met briefly with state party chairman Frank MacKay ... en route to a fundraiser at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Friday night.

"We had a substantive conversation about reform and independent politics," MacKay said. "He considers himself a reformer, I consider him a reformer."

MacKay declined to say whether McCain specifically asked for endorsements from the Independence Party. When pressed about the conversation, however, MacKay said, "We didn't discuss basketball."

New York's Independence Party - which boasts 350,000 members and bills itself the largest statewide third party in the nation - won't officially choose its candidate until September, MacKay said. But he said a third-party endorsement for McCain could encourage centrist Democrats unhappy with their party's candidate to support the Arizona senator in November...

McCain campaign spokesman Jeff Sadosky declined to confirm that the Arizona senator is seeking the Independence Party's endorsement, but acknowledged that in New York, the campaign faces "an uphill climb in the general election."
