Description | U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama will make Guam history when his campaign opens a Guam office in Hagatna in the first floor of the Captain building located across the Bank of Guam, people familiar with the plan said.
Details are being worked out with the lease, but for the first time, Guam voters will connect on a local level with a presidential candidate.
"No other presidential candidate has ever made this kind of commitment in Guam's history," a Variety source said.
Although voters on Guam are not able to vote in the general election in November, Guam Democrats are able to participate in the upcoming Democratic caucus on Saturday, May 3, 2008.
In 2004, the vote for president in the Guam democratic caucus was not as significant. But this year, the race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is very close and every delegate's vote matters.
There will be a total of eight pledged delegates who have ½ a vote, which equals four votes, and five super delegates who have one vote at stake in the Guam caucus this year for a total of nine delegate votes.
Taling Taitano, a Democratic national committeewoman, said that she is actively working to garner votes for her candidate, Hillary Clinton.
"Hillary supports war reparations and we're working with her to get press releases on health care and how it's going to impact Guam, as well as Compact Impact monies owed Guam, and of course, the military buildup," Taitano said.
Joshua Tenorio was recently named Guam state director for the Obama campaign and said, "I feel honored…as former executive director of the party, and having worked with Congressman (Robert) Underwood and Governor (Carl) Gutierrez, I've always been supportive of Senator Hillary Clinton, but over the last two weeks, I've been contacted by people from the Obama headquarters in Chicago and I've been aware of the grassroots movement on Guam," Tenorio said.
