Description | Barbara Sharief, the runner-up in the city's closely contested special election to replace suspended Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman, on Wednesday challenged the validity of absentee ballots in the race. Carl J. Lanke won the seat on Tuesday night by 13 votes, and Broward County 's Canvassing Board certified the results. But in a letter to Broward Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes, Sharief asked that the signatures on the absentee ballots be verified and confirmed. Of the 2,519 votes cast in the race, Lanke got 497, of which 135 came from absentee ballots. Of Sharief's 484 votes, 50 were cast through absentee ballots.
'I want to know where he found [135] people to vote absentee in Miramar,' Sharief said. 'It doesn't jibe.'
She said she plans to file a complaint with the Broward clerk of courts to formally contest the election.
