Description |
For the first time in three decades, Nebraska Democrats will have a choice between two serious contenders vying for their party's U.S. Senate nomination in the May primary.
Scott Kleeb, 32, is expected to announce his U.S. Senate candidacy Monday, setting the stage for a competitive primary against Columbus manufacturer Tony Raimondo, 68.
The winner will take on Republican heavyweight Mike Johanns. A former Nebraska governor and U.S. agriculture secretary, Johanns is expected to easily garner his party's nomination.
The primary is May 13.
Kleeb, who teaches history at Hastings College, ran a spirited congressional campaign against Adrian Smith in western Nebraska in 2006. He lost to Smith by 10 percentage points.
Kleeb planned to file for the Senate on Monday at the Secretary of State's Office, several top Democratic Party officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"I'll make an announcement Monday," said Kleeb. |
