DescriptionYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Just days after Congressman James Walsh's surprise announcement that he would retire, Democrats are scrambling to avoid any battle over who will be their candidate for the 25th congressional district seat.

Surrounded by key labor leaders and the chairs of at least two of the four county democratic committees in the 25th, Dan Maffei said he is the one best suited to be the democratic contender in November.

β€œIt really is humbling to have this much broad based support in this many circles at this early stage in the campaign,” said Maffei.

Just days after Congressman James Walsh's surprise announcement that he would retire, Democrats are scrambling to avoid any battle over who will be their candidate for the 25th congressional district seat.

And while the drive is clearly underway to again secure the nomination for Dan Maffei, there is a potential challenger, Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll, who's considering a bid for the job. Maffei says he has not talked to Driscoll and refused to spell out what he might say to discourage the mayor from running.

β€œI don't have any specific argument to anybody other than, I believe I'm the best candidate for change,” said Maffei.
