DescriptionLAS CRUCES — Business owner Greg Sowards announced Tuesday he will seek the Republican nomination for Congress in the 2nd District under the campaign slogan "short, bald and honest."

Sowards, 48, of Las Cruces, joins an already crowded field of five other Republicans in the southern New Mexico district. Four Democrats also are seeking the seat being vacated by Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., who is running for the U.S. Senate.

"I'm a conservative in my heart, not for convenience, but by conviction," Sowards said in a telephone interview.

Sowards, who challenged the late Republican Rep. Joe Skeen in 1996, owns four Kid's Kountry Child Care Centers and a small manufacturing business, Kwik Kik Equipment, that makes a punching bag of sorts for soccer players.

"The decisions that I make will be based on my conservative God-fearing principles and on the Constitution," he said in a news release. "People like you and I are needed at this critical time in Washington."
