Standing in front of Madison High School near Fair Park, Mayor Tom Leppert announced Thursday a new scholarship fund for disadvantaged students at three Dallas high schools.
The fund, supported in large part by Chesapeake Energy, will support a program with the potential to raise some $3 million in scholarship money for up to 100 students and to provide extensive mentoring for many more.
Mr. Leppert also announced that the fund will be supported in part through his own money. Over the next four years, Mr. Leppert will donate $50,000 a year of his $60,000 annual mayoral salary, he said.
“All of us realize that with all the great things going on in Dallas to get to the point where we all want to be…education is going to be a key element. Education is what is going to lead us to greatness,” Mr. Leppert said.
Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa called the scholarship fund something that will impact lives of students at Madison, Adamson and North Dallas high schools. |
