Description | Joan Kennedy, back in rehab after a weekend drinking binge, locked herself in a bathroom at a swank downtown health club last month, guzzling mouthwash until she could barely stand, a source told the Herald.
The Oct. 22 incident at the Sports Club LA marked yet another low point for Kennedy, who was put into a detox unit at a Boston hospital this weekend after she showed up drunk at a social event Friday night.
Both incidents may figure in a new courtroom battle that could call into question the vigilance of her court-appointed caretakers.
In a deal to avoid being declared incompetent two years ago, the 71-year-old Back Bay socialite agreed to abide by a court order not to drink after she took a drunken fall and broke her shoulder on Beacon Street. But Friday night, she was reportedly highly intoxicated at a charity function and was taken to a Hub detox center, where she remained last night.
“People are concerned about the caretakers,” said a source close to the family. “They’re supposed to stay with her 24 hours a day.”
Kennedy, the ex-wife of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), began Friday evening at a gala at the John F. Kennedy Library in honor of her former sister-in-law Eunice Shriver. She was later found to be intoxicated at another charity event that night and was taken to a Hub hospital.
