The New Hampshire Union Leader's John DiStaso has learned that former Governor Jeanne Shaheen will attempt a rematch against Sen. John Sununu in 2008. Shaheen narrowly lost her 2002 bid against the then-Congressman, though recent polls have shown her running well ahead in a state that gave Democrats perhaps their happiest moments in 2006.
Last year, New Hampshire Republicans not only lost both their incumbent Congressmen to insurgent Democratic candidates, they also lost the majorities in the state House and Senate they had held since the early 20th century. The Republican gubernatorial candidate even failed to break 30% as incumbent Democrat John Lynch, largely using Shaheen's political machine, won re-election with more than 73% of the vote.
Shaheen, the current head of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, has told her bosses to look for a replacement, according to the Nashua Telegraph's Kevin Landrigan. Her entry into the race makes it the third seat, after Virginia and Colorado, in which Democrats should be favored to win, dealing yet another blow to Republicans hoping to win back the Senate. |
