Description | The battle to succeed conservative icon Jesse Helms is one of the more compelling Senate contests in the country this year, with big-name candidates, party squabbling and plenty of rhetorical fireworks.
The race has been cast as a marquee matchup of political stars: Republican Elizabeth Dole vs. Democrat Erskine Bowles. But, Bowles has a pair of Democratic primary opponents nipping at his heels. State Rep. Dan Blue — the first African American to serve as speaker of the state House — and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall are running aggressive campaigns that attempt to focus on whether Bowles is too closely tied to corporate America. |
