Description | A self-described follower of former Gov. Edwin Edwards said she plans to run for governor with the top priority of getting him a pardon.
Mary Volentine Smith, a 66-year-old retired Winnsboro hairdresser, plans to join those hoping to succeed Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who's not running. Smith said she would run as a Democrat in her first bid for public office and that people should know a vote for her is "a vote for Edwin."
Edwards, a former Democratic governor, is in the midst of a 10-year sentence after being convicted in a fraud, extortion and racketeering case. In recent weeks, former Gov. Dave Treen and former U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston have said they don't want to see Edwards, 80, die in prison and would like to see his sentence commuted.
Other issues Smith raised include a statewide program to replace aging bridges and construction of a new mental hospital in Pineville. |
