Description | A grand jury voted to indict City Councilman Dennis Gallagher today for raping a 52-year-old woman in his Queens office, sources said.
Gallagher, 43, is expected to surrender to detectives at the 112th Precinct Friday morning and will likely be arraigned in Queens Supreme Court in the early afternoon.
"I am an innocent man and that fact has not changed," Gallagher insisted earlier today in an interview with the Daily News. "It's clear that not all the evidence was submitted to the grand jury."
News of the indictment comes just one day after Gallagher testified before the grand jury, telling the panel that he had "consensual" sex with his alleged victim in his district office in Middle Village on July 9.
"I know the (legal) process and (the indictment) was not unexpected," the Republican councilman said, adding that he has no intention of resigning from the post he was first elected to in 2001.
"In my life I've made some mistakes and I've done some things I'm not proud of but I always tried my best to represent my community and hope to continue to do so," he told the News.
