Sugar Grove dairy and investment magnate Jim Oberweis took the first step toward a congressional run Thursday, setting up an interesting Republican primary should ex-Speaker Dennis Hastert decide to retire.
A spokesman said Oberweis submitted paperwork to the Federal Election Commission forming an exploratory committee. The move allows Oberweis to start raising money and organizing a campaign in the 14th Congressional District.
Oberweis, who remarried this week, kept his filing low-key, not issuing a formal statement. He said last month that he likely would run for Congress if Hastert retires. Hastert lost control of the House last November and is expected to announce his political future later this month. |
