Description | Louisiana is on track to become the first state to outlaw a rare late-term abortion procedure, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld a federal ban.
A state Senate committee is expected to debate two bills this week that would ban so-called "partial birth" abortions, a surgical procedure that has become the center of angry debate between pro-choice and anti-abortion forces.
Other states are expected to consider similar bans, though Louisiana is the first to take action on legislation. A bill to criminalize the procedure has been introduced in Michigan's Legislature, but lawmakers have not acted on it.
