DescriptionGay rights activists celebrated after the Iowa House took a historic vote Wednesday night to extend civil rights protections to gays and lesbians, giving approval to the measure in the waning days of this year’s session of the Iowa Legislature.

The bill heads to Gov. Chet Culver for an expected signature.

The outcome of Wednesday’s vote had been uncertain as Democratic leaders launched headlong into debate, unsure whether enough Republicans would sign on to ensure its passage.

But after a rare procedural move that required House members to stay in the chamber for the vote, nine Republicans joined

50 Democrats to put the vote over the top on a 59-37 vote.

Janelle Rettig of Iowa City has worked for close to 17 years to get Iowa to adopt a civil rights measure protecting homosexuals. She hadn’t expected it to pass year. “I couldn’t be prouder of my state than today,” she said.

Rep. Dwayne Alons, R-Hull, who voted against the measure, was disappointed in the outcome of the vote. He fears it is a “slippery slope” for more gay rights to be recognized, such as marriage.
