Description | By a nearly two-to-one margin, Louisiana voters surveyed say former Gov. Edwin Edwards has served enough time in federal prison.
But the federal prosecutor who presided over Edwards' 2000 federal racketeering trial said Louisiana still is suffering because of the former governor's greed.
The poll, which has a margin of error of 3.5 points, showed 52 percent thought Edwards had served enough time, while 31 percent did not.
"It is significant that by a margin of two-to-one that Louisiana voters think he has served enough time for his crime," Kennedy said.
U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said Edwards, who was convicted of racketeering for manipulating the state's casino gaming licensing process in return for cash payments, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while prosecutors had argued for even more time.
Under federal law, Edwards will not be eligible for parole until he has served 8 1/2 years, the last six months of which can be in a halfway house. |
