DescriptionHe'll be running as a Democrat, and he's part of the Democrats' plan to expand the playing field.

He's been a high-tech executive, he climbs mountains. Why not take on six-term Rep. Jennifer Dunn, R-Bellevue, and try to get elected as a member of Congress?

House Democrats think that's what Alex Alben, 45, should do.

Alben, who retired this month from RealNetworks, agrees, describing himself as a "more socially progressive" but pro-business candidate with a background in intellectual-property law.

The Mercer Island resident said he would focus on expanding the 8th District's high-tech industries and exploring how the federal government could act as a catalyst for jobs and growth.

Alben's candidacy embodies the Democrats' strategy this year of expanding the playing field: While Dunn won re-election last year with 60 percent of the vote, Democrats argue they have a prime opportunity in a district that has been trending Democratic.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., won the district in 1998, and in 2000, Democrat Al Gore edged out George W. Bush in the state.
