Description | SANTA FE — The discussion on raising New Mexico's minimum wage is almost exactly where it was about this time last year, with the House and Senate at odds over details of the increase.
There's one big difference this year, however: Everyone in the Roundhouse, it seems, has the 2008 presidential campaign breathing down their necks.
Gov. Bill Richardson needs an increase, the red meat of the Democratic Party, and he needs it yesterday. Already in his national campaign trips he's talked about how the state is increasing the wage; not getting a bill this session would be a huge embarrassment for him.
But to get the wage hike, Richardson needs the House and Senate to agree.
And that didn't seem likely Thursday evening after the House passed a version of the Senate's wage increase with some substantial changes that key senators - and perhaps the governor - don't like. |
