Description | WASHINGTON -- With the Senate to begin debate soon on resolutions criticizing President Bush's plans to increase troop levels in Iraq, Louisiana's two senators could play high-profile roles.
Sen. David Vitter, R-La., who is supporting President Bush's plan for a surge of 21,500 troops, appeared Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" to argue that opponents are offering criticism but no plan to deal with the secular violence in Iraq. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., meanwhile, has signed on as a co-sponsor of one of the two leading anti-surge resolutions, offered by the former Republican chairman of the Armed Services Committee, John Warner of Virginia.
The Warner resolution says a troop increase is "not in the national interest," but doesn't go as far as the major alternative, offered by Sens. Joseph Biden, D-Del., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. That version says the continuing Iraqi conflict is "damaging the standing, influence and interests of the United States in Iraq, the Middle East and around the world."
