Description | Voters may be asked again to decide whether gay marriage should be banned under the state constitution.
A bill filed in the state House of Representatives would again ask voters to amend the Arizona Constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
The move comes after Arizona voters rejected Proposition 107 in November, becoming the first in the nation to reject a gay marriage ban at n the ballot box.
The key difference: Proposition 107, known as Protect Marriage Arizona, also went after domestic partnerships. It would have barred governments from recognizing relationships similar to marriage by, for example, providing health benefits to employees' partners.
The bill now before the House leaves out that provision, which many credit for the proposition's downfall. If it passes both chambers of the Legislature, which is likely, it would be put on the November 2008 ballot.
