Description | MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State Sen. Lowell Barron announced Wednesday he won't seek another term as president pro tem of the Senate, which left Sen. Jim Preuitt as the frontrunner in a shift of power after eight years with Barron as the Senate's most influential member.
But one of Barron's allies immediately expressed an interest in the Senate's top job, and another has been encouraged to run, possibly creating obstacles to Preuitt's bipartisan coalition.
"I've had several members talk to me and commit to me," Sen. Hinton Mitchem, D-Albertville, said. "I feel I could be a compromise candidate. I've worked closely with Republicans and with the governor's office on the budget."
