DescriptionScratch away at a Democrat in this tidy small town and you'll likely uncover a Jim Leach voter. In some cases, they are former Leach voters, who say they will return to their own party when choosing a congressman on Tuesday.

The question is whether there are enough of them across Iowa's 2nd District - combined with unhappy independents and conservatives so disgusted they stay home - to propel the 15-term moderate Republican out of office and install a newcomer in a turbulent and unpredictable election year.

Joanne McCabe of Mount Union showed up in the Henry County Democratic Party office here on a chilly, cloudy Saturday morning, ready to greet Leach's challenger, Democrat Dave Loebsack, and knock on doors with him looking for support.

"I just wanted to help with this election because I think it's important," said McCabe. "I have been against the war since the beginning."

So has Leach, the only Iowan from either party who voted against military action in Iraq. Leach has continued to strenuously object, most recently calling the war the greatest foreign policy mistake in U.S. history.

But McCabe said that's no longer adequate. "I have voted for Leach, but I would like to see the Democrats take over Congress," she said.
