DescriptionWhen voters cast a ballot for the U.S. Senate, they have a chance to send a message about change in Washington.

Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell deserves voters' strong support for her bulldog pursuit of fair energy prices, her effective work across party lines and her willingness to act as a counterweight to one-party government. The moderate Democrat is a consistent supporter of environmental causes, judicial independence and strong defense and law enforcement on everything from equipping the National Guard to border staffing, port security and dealing with methamphetamine.

Her main challenger, veteran Republican and former insurance executive Mike McGavick, is a smart, capable leader running a solid campaign. But he falls well short of making a case for change. His strongest point has been a sincere promise to reduce partisanship in Congress. But Cantwell already is more part of the solution than the problem, and she should work to do better on that score in a second term. Her successes on energy or meth, for instance, depended on Republican support. McGavick and Cantwell both know how to throw a sharp elbow, but they share tendencies to create solutions with pragmatism and direct communication.
