Description | The congratulatory phone calls began coming in at 6 a.m. Wednesday to Lori Swanson, the DFL's almost-accidental nominee for attorney general.
"It would have been nice if they'd waited until 7," said Swanson, who was up past midnight on election day before she knew she'd beaten state Sen. Steve Kelley and former U.S. Rep. Bill Luther in a three-way primary contest.
But there's no rest for the weary in politics, a field Swanson says she had no interest in until less than two months ago. Now it's on to the Nov. 7 general election against state Rep. Jeff Johnson, the Republican nominee; the Independence Party's John James and Papa John Kolstad of the Green Party.
Swanson, 39, of Eagan, showed signs Wednesday of being a quick study in the political rough and tumble.
She accused Johnson of casting legislative votes to cut funding for "key public safety programs" such as the state gang strike force, probation officers and criminal information systems. |
