DescriptionDemocrat Donna Edwards, an attorney and longtime political activist, appeared little threat to seven-term Democratic Rep. Albert R. Wynn last spring when she initiated a late-starting challenge for the Sept.12 primary in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.

Wynn — a member of the influential House Energy and Commerce Committee and the senior of Maryland’s two African-American Democrats in Congress — had not faced a whit of a contest in his black-majority suburban Washington since his first election in 1992. Edwards was virtually unknown to voters, outside of those involved in some activist circles in the district’s population base of Prince George’s County.

But Edwards has utilized an energetic campaign style, unexpectedly strong fundraising skills, her fervent opposition to the war in Iraq, and a whiff of controversy — in the form of a dustup between Wynn and Edwards volunteers that the challenger blamed on the congressman’s campaign — to become a factor in next Tuesday’s vote, if not a threat to the incumbent’s re-election.

Edwards has gained notice by calling attention to instances when Wynn has supported policies promoted by President Bush, who received a minuscule 21 percent of the 4th District’s vote in 2004 and likely has grown even more unpopular there since.
