Description | Iowa lawmakers and many other Iowans were mourning today at news of the death of state Rep. Mary Lou Freeman.
Authorities responded to Freeman's Alta home before 6 p.m. Tuesday and found Freeman's body. She had battled cancer for more than a year and the Buena Vista County sheriff's department said her death is believed to be of natural causes.
Freeman, a Republican, was seeking re-election to the Iowa House. It would have been her third term. She was 64.
“The entire state Legislature is shocked and deeply saddened by Mary Lou’s sudden departure,” House Speaker Christopher Rants said in a prepared statement issued late Tuesday.
Rep. Dolores Mertz, an Ottosen Democrat and friend of Freeman's said Tuesday she was "floored" by news of Freeman's death.
"She was a very compassionate person, a very caring persion and a very, very intelligent woman," Mertz said. "She had a lot of things to give. We all have lost a great service to the state of Iowa."
Freeman was an active member of her community, serving on a long list of organizations. She had worked as a schoolteacher and was first elected to the Iowa House in 2002. |
