DescriptionMark Green is a tough candidate to figure out.

The Republican congressman from Green Bay is a nice enough fellow and he has displayed a commendable commitment to public service. But he can't seem to figure out that he is running for governor of Wisconsin, not of the Tom DeLay Legal Defense Fund or the Republican National Committee.

Again and again since he entered the gubernatorial race, Green has been handed perfect opportunities to distinguish himself as an independent thinker who puts the best interests of his state and its citizens ahead of those of the Washington insiders who warp the politics of both the Republican and Democratic parties. And, again and again, Green has made the wrong choice.

After DeLay, the disgraced former House majority leader, was forced to leave his position, a number of Republican representatives chose to immediately and completely get rid of money they had received from DeLay and his political committees. They either returned the dirty money to the DeLay camp or gave an equivalent amount to charity. Green should have done the same. But he chose not to and, in so doing, cemented the connection to DeLay.
