Description | Steve Hobbs has experienced the best and worst of times in Iraq.
Deployed to Iraq in 2004, he personally delivered a number of United Nations ballot boxes for the first democratic elections there. Picking up the boxes when the elections were over was “incredible,” said the Army veteran. “You take this box that’s empty, you drop it off. When you pick it up two weeks later, it’s just filled (with votes) … by people taking part in the democratic process while being threatened with death.”
Now back home in the Pacific Northwest, the 36yearold Japanese American from Lake Stevens has decided to run for the state Senate from the 44th District. Holding public office would satisfy his lifelong desire to serve his country, he said, while also being available to his wife and sons, ages 8, 5 and 2.
Hobbs, a Democrat, is looking to unseat Republican Dave Schmidt this fall. Schmidt has served four years as a senator and eight years before that as a state representative. Hobbs’ first opponent, however, will come in the primary, where he faces fellow Democrat Lillian Kaufer. |
