DescriptionThe Senate Education and Health Committee on Thursday rejected a bill that opponents argued would have given school boards the authority to prevent gay-straight alliances from meeting after school on school grounds.

House Bill 1308, sponsored by Del. Matthew Lohr, R-Harrisonburg, would have given school boards the authority to “prohibit any school group or club that encourages or promotes sexual activity by unmarried students” from using school grounds.

“All (these groups) were teaching was respect and tolerance,” said state Sen. Janet Howell, D-Fairfax, recalling a visit she paid to a gay-straight alliance group in her district. “It had nothing to do with sex at all.”
