Description | He's always been the odd man out. Now Nick Licata is also the man in charge.
After something of a rough start, the congenial contrarian at the left end of the liberal Seattle City Council welcomes the challenge that comes with being the new council president.
But what Licata won't accept as the second-most- prominent person in Seattle politics, after the mayor, is the role of council leader.
"I don't view the president as the leader of the council," he said. "We're (not) all going to have the same agenda. We're not the special committee of the Soviet."
For good or bad, that's quintessential Licata -- more an individualist than a team player.
Now the anti-establishment insider is promising to serve two roles on the council. As one of nine members, he says he'll remain an independent government watchdog, as outspoken as he is well spoken. |
