Description | The 40 acres he rents and the calves he bottle feeds daily suggests something other than a role writing laws in Des Moines. He is a small farmer. And 22 years old.
But he is also a Grassley.
"I've been campaigning for six months, and I'm really excited," Pat Grassley says. "No Republicans are running, but I've heard rumors some Democrats will. I'm campaigning like I have an opponent."
His family name is ubiquitous, visible in national politics for decades. Pat is the grandson of U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley.
Iowa Republicans support the young Grassley, and groups affiliated with politicians based in Washington, D.C., are donating money. He has already raised $50,000.
Pat Grassley doesn't have an established platform but is preparing for the June primary by listening to voters' concerns, which he hopes to take to the Capitol.
"What I've learned from my grandpa is that he is always available to people. I think the biggest part of government is everyone has an opinion and it counts."
If elected come November, Grassley will be the youngest member of the Iowa House of Representatives. He will inherit the traditionally Republican District 17 seat from Bill Dix, a candidate for U.S. Congress. |
