Description | Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante kicked off an effort to lose 50 pounds at the Davis Stampede 5K walk on Sunday. In joining more than 4,000 runners and walkers at this year's race, Bustamante said he is hoping to fight obesity in California. The Davis Stampede is one of the first races of the season in the area, and Bustamante said he thought it was a great way to start his effort and "stop coming up with excuses."
"It has been well-reported that obesity is quickly becoming the leading cause of death in California and across the country," said Bustamante. "I am part of that problem. I have struggled with and joked about my weight for years. It's time now, whatever it takes, no more excuses."
Bustamante said some of his motivation factors to lose the weight come from his family and watching his father have a heart attack. His father suffers from diabetes, which is a known complication of obesity. Bustamante said he is concerned that the same thing could happen to him.
"If I don't change my life, I'm going to be on that [examination] table too. I want to be around to see my grandkids grow up," said Bustamante. |
