Description | Former Gov. Carroll Campbell, who scraped and clawed his way into the Governor’s Mansion in 1986, ranks as one of the giants in South Carolina political history.
He transformed South Carolina from a legislatively dominated state to a Cabinet form of government, and built the Republican Party into the formidable political force it is today — a feat of which he was most proud.
During his 16 years of public service, Campbell devoted his energy and money to recruit candidates and elect officials at the state and local level.
“It was remarkable how he built the party. He did it piece by piece,” recalled former U.S. Rep. John Napier, R-S.C.
“He was a visionary.”
Those who knew Campbell said he was on the phone constantly recruiting new party members.
“He got me to run,” said Napier. “He gave me my first contribution.
