Description | (Angus Reid Global Scan) – The election to the United States Senate in Missouri will be close, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 47 per cent of respondents in the Show Me State would support Democrat Claire McCaskill, while 45 per cent would vote for Republican incumbent Jim Talent.
Talent was first elected to the U.S. Senate in a 2002 special election, defeating Democrat Jean Carnahan—the widow of former governor Mel Carnahan—with 52 per cent of all cast ballots. Talent had previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2001.
McCaskill has served as Missouri’s state auditor since 1998. She lost the 2004 gubernatorial election to Republican Matt Blunt by 2.9 percentage points.
On Oct. 21, U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney spoke at a fundraising event for Talent’s campaign in St. Louis. Cheney said the Bush administration will "work to make tax cuts permanent" and reduce government spending in the next three years.
The senatorial election will take place in November 2006. |
