An excerpt...
"Canada's opposition parties hit
Prime Minister Paul Martin with an ultimatum, to set elections for January or face a confidence vote in Parliament.
Leaders of the three parties followed Jack Layton, leader of the social democratic New Democratic Party, who withdrew support after publication of a report on a scandal involving the Liberals.
Martin's Liberals hold only 133 of the 308 seats in the House of Commons, and counted heavily on the 18 seats held by the NDP, which was allied with Martin's minority Liberals.
The heads of the Conservatives and Quebecois had previously announced their willingness to bring down the government but the three could not agree among them.
"The prime minister and the Liberal Party will be asked whether or not they accept this proposal," Layton said.
"I don't think people will understand if the fourth party does not (agree) particularly if the fourth party's ethical conduct is at the root of the whole situation," he said.
"We agreed to support an NDP motion that will be moved at the earliest possible opportunity calling on the government to call an election the first week of January, 2006," said Conservative Leader Stephen Harper." |
