An excerpt...
"A report into a corruption scandal has vaulted the opposition Conservatives ahead of the ruling Liberals in an opinion poll published on Saturday, boosting the chances of an early vote to bring Canada's minority government down.
The poll, conducted by Strategic Counsel for the Globe and Mail newspaper, showed 31 percent of voters would back the Conservatives if an election were held now, up from 25 percent three weeks ago.
Support for the Liberals slumped to 28 percent, from 38 percent three weeks ago amid voter disgust at the report, which highlighted kickbacks to Quebec Liberals during a badly administered advertising campaign to boost the image of Canada in the French speaking province.
The Liberals hold only a minority of seats in Parliament and have been governing with the support of the left-leaning New Democratic Party. Support for the NDP rose to 20 percent in the poll, from 17 percent three weeks ago.
"The temptation to defeat the government will be overwhelming," pollster Allan Gregg told the newspaper. "They know that when this issue fades, their fortunes fade with it, so sooner is better than later."
Canada's two biggest opposition parties are the Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois, which supports Quebec independence and only runs candidates in the province." |
