Byron W. Brown holds a staggering lead of 60 percent to 19 percent over Kevin J. Helfer in Buffalo's mayoral race less than three weeks before the election, according to a Buffalo News poll.
Democrat Brown overwhelms Republican Helfer in virtually every demographic group. In his effort to become the city's first African-American mayor, Brown also posts a substantial lead among white voters.
"There's an air of inevitability here," pollster John Zogby said. "Something has gone right with this campaign."
In the poll conducted Wednesday and Thursday, Zogby International surveyed 504 registered voters likely to vote. The margin of error is 4.5 percentage points,
Judith S. Einach of the Green Party and Charles J. Flynn of the Independence Party do not appear to be factors in the race. Einach polled 5 percent, while Flynn tallied less than 1 percent.
All this leads Zogby, of Utica, to describe Brown's numbers as "breathtaking." While he emphasized that an expected blitz of Helfer advertising and the effect of two televised debates still must be weighed, Brown enters the campaign's final stage in a most comfortable position. |
