Description | Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) have agreed to a coalition deal that will make conservative Christian Democrat (CDU) leader Angela Merkel chancellor.
SPD sources say that under the deal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's SPD will get eight ministerial posts in the cabinet, compared to six for the CDU.
It is not clear what role if any Mr Schroeder will have in the coalition.
Both Mr Schroeder and Mrs Merkel had laid claim to the chancellery after a tight election on 18 September.
The "grand coalition" deal must still be approved by both parties and parliament. |
