DescriptionGerman Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has renounced his claim to rule, saying he won't ``stand in the way'' of a stable government after his Social Democrats lost a delayed election in the eastern city of Dresden.

``I don't want to stand in the way of the development of the reform process or a stable government in Germany,'' Schroeder, 61, told German news broadcaster N-TV in an interview before a meeting of his party's steering committee in Berlin.

Schroeder and his opposition challenger Angela Merkel, 51, both insisted on the right to form the new government after the Sept. 18 national election failed to give either of them a majority. They have since met twice in an effort to form the first ``grand coalition'' government in Germany since 1969.
