A recent public opinion poll has Morgan County Probate Judge Bobby Day the most popular candidate to succeed Tommy Ed Roberts in Senate District 3.

Day, 72, plans to seek the Democratic nomination for the post, which Roberts, of Hartselle, will leave at the end of his current term.

The Alabama Education Association contracted with Capital Survey Research Center to conduct the poll. It shows Day leading in the Democratic primary and the general election in 2006, according to Gerald Johnson, director.

Day and former state Rep. Angelo Mancuso are the only candidates to announce plans for the Democratic nomination. Arthur Orr is the only GOP contender so far.

Pollsters surveyed 480 registered voters in the Morgan, Limestone and Madison district, according to a document showing results.

The poll shows Day with 53 percent and Mancuso with 34.5 percent in a primary election.

Day also received the highest percentage for a general election race against Orr. Day received 45.2 percent and Orr got 26.7 percent, the poll shows.
