AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry reached across party lines Wednesday to find a fix for the state's school finance system, tapping longtime political rival John Sharp to lead a blue-ribbon committee that will seek new tax sources for public education and property tax relief.
Mr. Perry announced his surprise selection by telling reporters that he and Mr. Sharp – Aggies who ran against each other for lieutenant governor in 1998 – had buried the political hatchet and were ready to work together on the volatile issue of tax reform.
Mr. Sharp, who joined the governor, also announced that he would not seek the Democratic nomination for governor next year, even though recent polls show he is the only member of his party who could seriously challenge Mr. Perry, a Republican seeking his second full term in 2006. |
